All of the evidence suggests that experts are made not born, which means every single one of us has an opportunity to do our part to shift the significant inequality and elevate more diverse female voices.
Despite progress toward gender equality, women continue to be significantly underrepresented as experts on visible platforms of influence.
This under-representation stifles not only the progress of gender equality
but also the societal benefits it unlocks.
All of the evidence suggests that experts are made not born, which means every single one of us has an opportunity to do our part to shift the significant inequality and elevate more diverse female voices.

A note from the author…
Hi I’m Penny,
A behavioural scientist, impact expert and mentor, international speaker, published author, budding psychologist and trauma therapist, nature lover, yogi and proud single mum.
I’m also on a quest to teach 1 million purpose-driven women how to change the world without self-doubt so that they can shape a brighter and more inclusive future.
After spending the past few years undertaking hundreds of depth interviews with high-performing women across corporate and entrepreneurship to understand what holds them back from flourishing I started to notice a trend. Many of these women wanted to make a meaningful difference in the world through their work, were highly experienced yet didn’t feel ready to step up as an expert publicly.
I love evidence-based research so my curiosity drove me to the literature on how we define what an expert is, what makes one and what the statistics have to say about women as experts.
To my surprise in the year 2024 women’s voices in positions of influence are still massively under represented globally. If women don’t learn to seize the advantage of visibly becoming an expert, to create the impact they seek to have, we will never achieve gender parity and our ability to shape a more compassionate and inclusive society will be stifled.
As a woman striving to do her part in leaving the world a little better than how I found it, I felt compelled to shine a spotlight on how women’s relationship with the word expert impacts their ability to become one and what we can do to shift the balance of expert power.
This whitepaper is the result of my relentless drive to elevate the impact and voices of women who need to be seen and heard. I hope you find it as interesting to read as I did in doing the research and analysis.
Warmly Penny
